inlovingmemory — the work of elmo kennedy o’connorfall 2023
this is a monograph about the life and work of musical artist elmo kennedy o’connor (known as bones, surrenderdorothy, ricky a go go, etc.) 184 pages full of every release he’s ever had printed on super nice french paper and some envelopes full of pictures from music videos. took ages, but probably my favorite thing i’ve made to date.
early into the design process i had to figure out a proper way to present this massive amount of work. elmo’s music spans a vast amount of genres, styles, and years, so it was difficult to pin down an exact visual style that would do it justice.
since the beginning, elmo’s music has been centered around the internet with many early releases being hosted on blogspot, wix sites, and public forums. tracking down all of these releases one by one and downloading all relevant information to them had my computer more organized than it had ever been before. separate folders with monikers, years, releases, etc. so i decided to format the book in that way as well, to show both the amateur, computer-based image elmo has created for himself, and the process i took to sort all of this jumbled, rare content.
“deadletters” is a companion piece to the book containing envelopes of photos from music videos shown inside the book. it is styled to look like a package from a small town photo processing place strewn with little easter eggs. the idea for this came from the analog nature of elmo’s music and style, given that the majority of his music videos are filmed with old vhs cameras found at thrift shops.
the photos were originally intended to be placed in envelopes inside the book, but after some tests, that was an awful idea!
